Shopify merchants smash Black Friday records with $4.1bn in sales
Shopify merchants worldwide have set a new Black Friday record, raking in a combined total of $4.1 billion USD in sales, marking a 22% increase over the previous year.
In Australia, Shopify merchants experienced their peak sales hour at 10AM AEST on November 24. Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane emerged as the top-selling cities, with an average cart price of $165.70 AUD. The top five product categories by orders were clothing, personal care, kitchen & dining, shoes, and jewellery. Interestingly, mobile sales dominated, accounting for 73% of total sales, while desktop sales made up the remaining 27%. Cross-border orders constituted 14% of total orders, and point-of-sale (POS) sales saw a 27% growth compared to last year.
Globally, the peak sales per minute reached a staggering $4.2 million USD on Black Friday at 12:01 PM EST. The top-selling countries were the U.S., UK, and Canada, while the top-selling cities were Los Angeles, New York, and London. The average cart price was $110.71 USD, with clothing, personal care, jewellery, shoes, and decor being the most popular product categories. Mobile sales accounted for 75% of total sales, with desktop sales making up the remaining 25%. Cross-border orders made up 15% of total orders, and POS sales saw a 33% increase from last year.
