Meta's new reset button for Instagram recommendations comes as social media age limits set to hit Parliament

Meta has announced it will begin testing a new feature that allows all Instagram users, including teens, to reset their content recommendations.

The feature is set to roll out globally in the coming weeks. This new feature builds on existing tools and restrictions that allow users to curate what they see in their recommendations, such as Teen Accounts.

With the new feature, users can clear their recommended content across Explore, Reels and Feed in just a few steps. When resetting, users also have the option to review the accounts they’re following and unfollow any that share content they no longer want to see. Over time, recommendations will start to personalise again, showing new content based on the content and accounts people interact with.

The latest customisations come amid a furore around the harms of social media usage across children and teenagers and the expected drop of proposed legislation introducing an under-16 social media usage ban by the Federal Government in this week's Parliamentary sitting.

"We recognise parents are concerned that their teens might see mature or inappropriate content online, which is why we have stricter rules around the kinds of content teens can see on our apps. In addition to removing content completely when it breaks our rules, we take steps to help prevent teens from seeing content that may be sensitive or mature. We avoid recommending it, and in some cases we hide it from teens altogether, even if it’s shared by someone they follow," Meta stated.

In an effort to provide more transparency, Meta has published a new page on their Transparency Center to share more information about how they ensure teens see age-appropriate content across their platforms.
