Meta and Project Rockit unwrap online intimacy education for Aussie youth
Meta is joining forces with Australia's youth-led initiative, Project Rockit, to launch a series of educational videos titled 'Intimate Images Unwrapped'.
The series aims to enhance peer understanding of intimate image-sharing dynamics, a move that aligns with Meta's ongoing commitment to safeguarding young people in the digital space.
The video series, supported by Meta, underscores the importance of establishing healthy boundaries, honouring consent, and making informed choices. It's a departure from the traditional 'just don't do it' advice typically given to young people about sharing images online, according to Project Rockit Co-Founder & CEO Lucy Thomas.
"Through this honest, youth-created series, we dive into the essential dynamics of image-sharing through a framework of respect and dignity. Through this exploration, we are purposefully enhancing young people's abilities to navigate connections, self-expression, and online participation in healthy and empowering ways," she said.
The episodes, co-created with young people using Project Rockit's participatory co-design process, are being rolled out on Instagram, with additional resources available online. This initiative is part of Meta's broader strategy to halt the spread of intimate images, as evidenced by the development of dedicated products like 'Take It Down'.
The need for such an initiative is underscored by research from the Journal of Adolescent Health, which revealed that almost 1 in 5 (19.3%) young persons under the age of 18 have sexted, while more than half this figure (14.5%) forwarded a sext without consent.
Meta's Regional Policy Director, Mia Garlick, expressed pride in the partnership with Project Rockit.
"By partnering with Project Rockit, we hope to play a role in supporting and protecting young people to help everyone make well-informed choices while honouring consent and healthy boundaries for one another," he said.
