Nunn Media reclaims Spotlight Retail Group's media buying account from PHD; no equity but billionaire Spotlight founder on Nunn board
Nunn Media has regained the media buying account for Spotlight Retail Group (SRG), which includes Anaconda and Harris Scarfe in the portfolio. Wild numbers have been bandied about on Spotlight's billings, thought to be $40-50m.
The independent agency lost the account to OMG's PHD in 2020 but has won it back in a competitive three-way pitch process, run by consultants Madclarity, and announced this week.
Nunn Media quashed industry conjecture of Spotlight having any equity interest in the agency but the retail group's billionaiire founder and rich lister, Morry Fraid, sits on the board of the media agency.
Prior to PHD Media landing the business three years ago, Nunn Media held the account from 2014 to 2020.
SRG operates a range of leading retail brands, including Spotlight, Anaconda, and Harris Scarfe. As part of the new appointment, Nunn Media will deliver integrated digital, online, and broadcast media buying campaigns for SRG. Mi3 understands the account is worth at least $45 million annually.
Matt Nunn, Managing Director of Nunn Media, said: “It’s pleasing to see the Spotlight Retail Group again recognise Nunn Media for its operational scale, digital expertise and ability to execute campaigns that drive tangible commercial results.”
Nunn Media has recently secured several major clients, including Bakers Delight from PHD Media in August 2023, and Melbourne Airport in September 2023. With these wins, Nunn Media now surpasses $500 million in annual billings, boasting more than 170 staff globally and offices in Australia and the United States.
“Nunn Media continues to go from strength to strength as the nation’s largest independent media specialist. We’ve entered 2024 with more clients, an expanding suite of capabilities and the industry’s best talent," Nunn said.
The competitive pitch process was run by an independent third party. Chief Executive Officer of Spotlight, Quentin Gracanin, said: “After assessing three agencies to raise the standard of media campaigns for SRG brands, it’s clear Nunn Media is the ideal partner moving forward. It’s an agency that brings scale, offers all capabilities we require, understands our marketing ambitions and our desired mix of channels," he said.
