Australian retail industry reels after Bondi Junction attack

The Australian Retailers Association (ARA) and Scentre Group have responded to the events that unfolded at Bondi Junction Westfield on Saturday afternoon, which saw six people fatally stabbed in an unprovoked attack.

"The tragic events at Bondi Junction yesterday, which are still unfolding in their impact, have left our retail community and the broader community in deep shock and sadness," said the Australian Retailers Association in a statement. "Our heartfelt condolences to all amongst your teams or customer base affected during this difficult time. We also recognise the incredible courage and rapid response undertaken by brave frontline retail workers and first responders who acted quickly to protect Australians during this harrowing incident."

The Australian Retailers Association is currently in dialogue with the NSW Government regarding support services for retail teams and customers affected.

Scentre Group, the owner of Bondi Junction Westfield, confirmed that one of its security guards, Faraz Ahmad Tahir, was killed during the incident. Another member of the Scentre Group security team was injured and remains in hospital.

"Scentre Group extends its deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of those impacted by the tragedy at Westfield Bondi," said Scentre Group Chief Executive Officer Elliott Rusanow. "We extend our deep appreciation for the swift and brave action of our team and first responders. Our team continues to provide full assistance to the NSW emergency services response."

"We are devastated by Faraz's passing and recognise our team member's bravery and role as a first responder. Our deepest and heartfelt condolences go out to his family and all who are mourning the loss of loved ones. Our thoughts and concerns are also with the families and carers of those injured in the attack and the everyday heroes whose actions prevented further loss of life," said Rusanow.

The Scentre Group is providing mental health and counselling services for customers, business partners, and people affected by the incident. The NSW Police have established Strike Force Mcauley to continue investigations into the incident.

The attacker was shot dead by police at the scene. Five victims died at the scene, and sixth victim passed away in hospital. Twelve others were treated for stab wounds and taken to various Sydney hospitals. Police have ruled out terrorism as a motive for the attack and suggested that the attacker appeared to be targeting women.
