SBS launches 'Grand Gestures' podcast, exploring multicultural Australia through family stories
SBS has launched a new podcast that is set to explore multicultural and multilingual Australia through interviews with 10 notable Australians who share family stories and discuss their relationships with their grandparents.
Hosted by comedian Lizzy Hoo, the 'Grand Gestures' podcast will touch on the triumphs and challenges of settling in Australia, the migrant experience, and multi-generational, cross-cultural family life.
Guests on the podcast include singer Deni Hines, former Masterchef contestant Alice Zaslavsky, actress Pia Miranda, Walkley Award-winning journalist Pat Abboud, singer-songwriter Emily Wurramara, comedian Emo Majok, and Nadine J. Cohen. The podcast is available on the SBS Audio app, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, LiSTNR, and other podcast streaming platforms.
"Grand Gestures is like a warm hug from your grandparents - it's full of warmth and stories that remind you of your own loved ones," said Hoo. The comedian emphasised the importance of grandparents as the keepers of family stories and histories, especially as we age and begin to appreciate the depth of these narratives. "Especially as we get older, we start to realise our grandparents are the keepers of all the family stories and histories."
The podcast aims to delve into a variety of experiences, from joyous moments to overcoming life's challenges. "There's a lot of laughs, beautiful stories about happy times but also stories of overcoming life's challenges like illness, disability and discrimination," Hoo said.
