Google's Gemini gets an upgrade with custom AI topic-matter experts and enhanced image generation

Google's Gemini platform is introducing new features, including AI expert 'Gems' and an enhanced image generation model, 'Imagen 3'. These updates aim to empower users to create their own personal AI experts on any topic, and generate high-quality images with just a few words.

'Gems' is a feature that allows users to create their own AI experts on any topic. This feature is available for Gemini Advanced, Business, and Enterprise users. Users can customise 'Gems' to act as an expert on specific topics or refine them towards specific goals. Google is launching premade 'Gems' for different scenarios including a learning coach, brainstormer, career guide, writing editor, and coding partner. 'Gems' are now available on desktop and mobile devices to Gemini Advanced, Business, and Enterprise users in more than 150 countries in most languages.

'Imagen 3' is an upgraded creative image generation model that sets a new standard for image quality. It generates images from just a few words and can create images in various styles like photorealistic landscapes, textured oil paintings or whimsical claymation scenes. 'Imagen 3' has built-in safeguards and adheres to product design principles, performing favourably compared to other image generation models. 'Imagen 3' uses SynthID, a tool for watermarking AI-generated images.

The generation of images of people will also start to roll out, with an early access version for Gemini Advanced, Business, and Enterprise users, starting in English. However, 'Imagen 3' does not support the generation of photorealistic, identifiable individuals, depictions of minors or excessively gory, violent or sexual scenes.

The rollout of these new features is gradual, with the aim to bring it to more users and languages soon. These updates mark a significant step in AI-driven creativity, offering users the ability to create personalised AI experts and generate high-quality images with ease.
