IKEA Australia embraces Afterpay just in time for Black Friday sales

IKEA Australia has announced that it will start accepting Afterpay as a payment option in-store and online from Wednesday 13th November 2024. This move comes just in time for the IKEA Black Friday sales, which offer up to 40% off selected products. Afterpay customers can now shop at any of IKEA’s 10 stores and 3 Plan and Order points nationwide or online, spreading costs across four interest-free fortnightly instalments.

To check out with Afterpay in-store, customers need to download the Afterpay app and add the Afterpay Card to their digital wallet (Google Pay or Apple Pay) and tap to pay as they would with any other digital card.

This development is significant as Afterpay has seen a 127% increase in sales within the home and garden category over the past five years. Afterpay is currently available in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United States and the United Kingdom, where it is known as Clearpay.

"As a nation, we are passionate about home renovation and design, and nothing embodies this more than our national love for IKEA. Over the past five years, we've seen a 127% increase in Afterpay sales within the home and garden category. We are thrilled to be providing Afterpay customers at IKEA with a new and enhanced shopping experience that will help Aussies transform their homes while balancing their spending," said Katrina Konstas, EVP, Country Manager at Afterpay.

IKEA, founded in Sweden in 1943, offers well-designed, functional and affordable, high-quality home furnishing products. Ingka Group, which owns and operates IKEA sales channels under franchise agreements with Inter IKEA Systems B.V., represents about 90% of IKEA retail sales.

"We are always looking to create a more convenient shopping experience at IKEA Australia. Affordability has never been more important to our customers, and now with Afterpay, we can provide even more flexible ways to purchase the home furnishings of their dreams. Whether it's making a small or big upgrade around the house, preparing the home for entertaining over summer, or finding the perfect Christmas gift at IKEA, our customers can now enjoy the convenience and freedom that Afterpay offers when shopping at an IKEA store or online," said Daniela Altiparmakova, Deputy Digital Manager at IKEA Australia.
