BigCommerce merchants enjoy 10% GMV boost during Cyber Week 2023
BigCommerce, a leading ecommerce platform, has reported a 10% increase in gross merchandise value (GMV) for its merchants during Cyber Week 2023, compared to the same period in 2022. The company also noted a 7% rise in total orders and a 3% increase in average order value (AOV) over the previous year's Cyber Week.
These figures outpace the overall US ecommerce sales growth for the period, which Adobe Analytics reports at 7.8% over 2022. Globally, Salesforce data indicates a 6% rise in ecommerce sales over the five-day period.
Cyber Monday was a particular highlight, with a 12% year-on-year sales spike, according to Brent Bellm, CEO at BigCommerce. 'Cyber Week closed with a 12% spike in year-over-year sales on Cyber Monday, signalling consumers' urgency to capitalise on deep discounts before they were gone,' Bellm said.
Merchants on BigCommerce's enterprise plans experienced higher GMV and order growth over 2022. Mobile orders also saw a slight uptick, accounting for 38% of all Cyber Week orders, with sales on mobile devices increasing by 13% in 2023.
Top-performing categories by GMV increase were Apparel & Accessories (+22%), Food & Beverage (+20%) and Vehicles & Parts (+20%). In the EMEA region, GMV surged 20% on a 10% increase in total orders.
Black Friday GMV was up 8% and Cyber Monday GMV was up 12% over 2022. Total orders on Cyber Monday were up 10% over last year. Among marketplaces, Amazon led the pack with the highest GMV and most orders for BigCommerce merchants, followed in GMV by eBay and Walmart.
BigCommerce also celebrated achieving 100% uptime for the tenth year in a row during Cyber Week. 'It's gratifying to see BigCommerce customers perform well and benefit from our platform achieving 100% uptime for the tenth year in a row,' Bellm said.
These positive results follow a promising start to the holiday shopping season in October, with Adobe Analytics reporting a 5.9% year-over-year increase in online spending. BigCommerce customers also saw positive numbers in online orders, GMV and AOV for the month of October versus the previous year.
