M&C Saatchi's THIS. Film Studio scoops Sydney Film Festival Audience Award for 'SKATEGOAT' doco

Australian documentary 'SKATEGOAT', produced by THIS. Film Studio, part of the M&C Saatchi Group, has clinched the Sydney Film Festival GIO Audience Award.

The film, which had its world premiere on June 15, 2024, traces the life of pro skateboarder Leandre Sanders and his rise from the streets of LA and Venice Beach to the global stage. It will set launch in selected cinemas from August 1, 2024.

'SKATEGOAT' took seven years to make, a testament to the dedication of the production team at THIS. Film Studio. The studio is the Australian production team behind acclaimed films 'BRA BOYS' and 'FIGHTING FEAR'.

The film was directed by Van Alpert, a renegade graffiti artist and acclaimed music video director. Alpert's unique perspective and storytelling style have undoubtedly contributed to the film's success.

Leandre Sanders, the subject of the documentary, expressed his excitement about the film's release and its reception. “It’s hard to describe the feeling of knowing that my story is ready and out there for the world to see, it’s crazy!” he said. Sanders also expressed his affection for Australia. "My love for Australia is real. To come to Sydney to see the world premiere of this movie at the Sydney Film Festival is insane. It feels like I’ve come home.”

Michael Lawrence, a key figure in the film's production, shared his thoughts on the film's award. “Winning the Sydney Film Festival GIO Audience Award is a truly humbling moment for everyone involved in making this film,” he said. Lawrence also expressed his gratitude towards Sanders, saying, “It has been an absolute privilege to have been welcomed into Leandre's world and be allowed to document his journey over the last seven years. The result is a wonderful story of love, ambition and resilience that transcends all borders.”
