CRA reports record radio audience in GfK Survey 2, Kyle & Jackie O take Sydney breakfast

The second GfK radio ratings survey of the year is out, with a record 12.27 million listeners tuning according to Commercial Radio & Audio (CRA).

"Commercial radio keeps reaching new records when it comes to the number of Australians that choose to make it part of their everyday lives, whether they are younger or older listeners," said CRA chief commercial officer, Jo Dick, who is currently caretaking the CEO role after Ford Ennals' sudden departure on Monday .

The survey period, which ran from Sunday 4 February to Saturday 30 March, saw significant shifts to the breakfast leadership board in both the Sydney and Melbourne markets.

In Sydney, Kyle & Jackie O managed to knock Ben Fordham from the top spot, pulling in a 16.1% share of audience for KIIS in the coveted time spot, up 0.7 points on the last book. Meanwhile, 2GB's Fordham dropped 1.7 points, for a 14.9% share.

The top share in drive also went to KIIS, with Will and Woody gaining 0.3 points to finish on 11%, sneaking ahead of smoothfm's Byron Webb on 10.9% - up 0.1 point from the first survey.

Overall, 2GB held the top spot in the market with 11.9% share, ahead of KIIS and smoothfm with 11% each.

3AW retained the top spot in Melbourne breakfast with 18.%, while The Fox's Fifi, Fev & Nick (11.2%) is now the top FM program in the time slot after a 0.4 point lift. GOLD's Christian O'Connell (9.9%) was knocked into third place over all after losing 2 points on the last book. KIIS sits in seventh place with 6.4% ahead of Kyle & Jackie O's launch into the market at the end of the month.

The Fox is also closing in on the drive slot, with Carrie & Tommy lifting 0.6 points to 10.4% share, just behind GOLD's Dave 'Higgo' Higgin on 10.8, after losing 0.5 points.

Overall, 3AW remained comfortably in the lead, with a 13.8% audience share, ahead of GOLD's 10.9% and The Fox's 10.1%.

In Brisbane B105 (11.9%) remained the top station for a second survey period, just 0.1 point ahead of Triple M (11.8%).

SCA Chief Content Officer, Dave Cameron, said: “Today is a day that our powerhouse shows and talent have delivered impressive results, starting with Carrie & Tommy becoming Australia’s newly crowned national #1 Drive show for the first time, followed closely by an incredible result from Melbourne’s most listened to Breakfast show, Fifi, Fev & Nick, on The Fox returning to #1 FM."

ARN Chief Content Officer, Duncan Campbell, said: “It’s no surprise to see The Kyle & Jackie O Show leading the pack, #1 overall again and well ahead of their competition. Survey after survey, Kyle and Jackie O continue to dominate the airwaves, solidifying their position as the unrivalled leaders in breakfast radio. There really is no other show like The Kyle & Jackie O Show on air, and we can’t wait for their debut in Melbourne on April 29."

Nine Radio’s Head of Content, Greg Byrnes, said: “Talk content is relentless but our listeners know they can trust us. That’s the reason 2GB and 3AW are the clear number one in their markets, and it’s why more and more listeners are tuning to 4BC and 6PR. We don’t take the responsibility lightly and thank our audience for its loyalty.”

More than 2.7 million listeners aged 10 to 24 tuned in to radio during the survey period, up 1.6% year-on-year. Meanwhile, more than a quarter of all listeners are choosing to stream commercial radio, with 3.13 million listeners spending 4 hours 22 minutes listening via streaming.

"While we are seeing more people tuning in via digital radio or streaming, there are still many who listen the traditional way, whether that is on a radio at home or in the car - the beauty of radio is that there are so many options for people to listen and it can go with you wherever you are," said CRA's Jo Dick.
