Robocall fraud to peak at US$76bn globally in 2024, predicts Juniper Research

A recent study by Juniper Research forecasts that global losses to fraudulent robocalling will surge to US$76 billion in 2024, up from US$64 billion in 2023.

However, the report suggests that from 2026, these losses will start to decline due to the implementation of frameworks like STIR/SHAKEN and branded calling solutions that effectively block fraudulent robocalls. AI-based voice cloning, which uses AI to generate realistic human-like speech in real-time, is identified as the primary challenge to reducing these losses by 2026.

The report urges robocall mitigation vendors to tackle the rise in voice cloning by ensuring that frameworks can identify fraudulent robocalls before they connect to the subscriber. Phone number whitelists, such as the Robocall Mitigation Database (RMD) in the US, are suggested as a tool to authenticate enterprises before the call is made. The study predicts that branded calling solutions, which display a visual key to inform users of the call's legitimacy, will have the most immediate impact in minimising losses to robocalling scams.

The report suggests that robust verification processes for enterprises using branded calling solutions are necessary to build trust among subscribers. The study predicts that branded calls will limit the pick-up rate for fraudulent robocalls using AI, and reduce the impact of this emerging threat before subscribers answer calls.
