Coles unveils first automated customer fulfilment centre in Victoria to shake-up online grocery market

Coles, one of Australia's leading supermarket chains, has launched its first Customer Fulfilment Centre (CFC) in Victoria. This move is part of a $400 million partnership with Ocado, a global leader in online grocery transformation and sees the facility utilising Ocado's advanced technology, including artificial intelligence, advanced robotics, and automation.

According to Coles, the new facility is set to enhance the online shopping experience for customers, promising better availability, fewer substitutions, and an increased range of products. The CFC will cater to the greater Melbourne region, home to more than five million people. It will house a variety of specialty brands and local foods from smaller suppliers, offering a wider selection for customers.

The Truganina site, spanning over 87,000 square metres, can hold three million units of stock. When running at full capacity, it can process more than 10,000 customer orders per day. The CFC will employ more than 1,000 team members and will operate a fleet of more than 200 home delivery vans.

"Today's opening signals a major step change in our online grocery deliveries that will offer our customers greater choice, better availability, improved freshness and more flexible delivery options," said Leah Weckert, Coles Chief Executive Officer.

The facility has been designed with sustainability in mind. Features include a two-megawatt solar installation, sensor lighting, a water recycling system, and 100% recycling of cardboard. These initiatives align with Coles' commitment to environmental sustainability.

"The opening of this CFC is the result of a five-year partnership with Ocado, whose world-class experience is helping Coles to innovate and meet the changing needs of our customers," said James Graham, Coles Group Chairman.

Tim Steiner, CEO of Ocado Group, also expressed his excitement about the launch. "It's a great moment for Ocado as we mark the start of our operations here in Australia with Coles. This is one of the fastest growing markets in the world for grocery ecommerce, and Coles is already a market leader in the online channel."

Coles is set to open a second CFC site in Wetherill Park, New South Wales, next month, further expanding its online grocery capabilities and reach.
