ABC names returning favourites and 23 new commissions to 2025 content slate

ABC has revealed its 2025 content slate, outlining a diverse range of programming across its linear and digital and the creation of 23 new titles spanning various genres such as drama, comedy, children's content, factual programming, documentaries, and arts coverage.

The public broadcaster reflected on a strong year across platforms in 2024, claiming ABC iview as the top BVOD choice for on-demand programming, while ABC News was said to be Australia’s leading digital news brand in September and ABC Radio is Australia’s was the top digital live streaming network.

ABC Chief Content Officer, Chris Oliver-Taylor said: "As the largest commissioner of Australian content we’re thrilled to share our 2025 slate, including 23 new titles across all genres. Audiences will see original premium homegrown drama, a comedy slate that delivers some of our country's biggest hits, children’s content that connects with kids not only in Australia but all over the world, impactful factual programming and documentaries that resonate with Australians in the city and country. Our unrivalled arts coverage includes six primetime series in 2025 complementing live music events, Mardi Gras and New Year’s Eve celebrations that bring Australians together. The ABC is the home of Australian content in 2025."

On screen, the ABC has welcomed an adaption of bestselling Australian author Sally Hepworth's novel The Family Next Door and new six-part comedy series Optics to its scripted programming, alongside the return of Mystery Road: Origin, Bay of Fires, Austin, Mother and Son, Return to Paradise and The Newsreader.

In entertainment, the broadcaster has flagged the return of comedy programs Spicks & Specks, Guy Montgomery’s Spelling Bee, Hard Quiz, Gruen, The Weekly with Charlie Pickering and the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Also returning to ABC TV and ABC iview is Gardening Australia, Offsiders, Shaun Micallef’s Eve of Destruction and A Bite To Eat.

ABC's Fresh Blood initiative with Screen Australia will see three debut projects hit screens in 2025, including Going Under, Urvi Went to an All Girls School and Westerners.

As for documentaries, The Role of a Lifetime will see Amanda Keller and an ensemble of comedians explore parenting dilemmas, and Dr Ann Jones will get up close and personal with some of the most reclusive creatures on the planet in Dr Ann Secret Lives. Other titles coming in 2025 include Miriam Margolyes: Made in NZ, Orca: Australia’s Megapod, The Kimberley, Eat The Invaders with Tony Armstrong, Dr Karl’s How Things Work, I Was Actually There, Muster Dogs, The Assembly, Grand Designs Australia, Restoration Australia, Back Roads, Landline and Compass.

Tony Armstrong will also host End Game, exploring global solutions to the rising tide of racism in Australian sport, and new ABC Indigenous original format Hear Me Out will tackle the often contentious discussion surrounding Australia Day from a First Nations point of view.

Music, arts and events programming will include The Piano, fronted by Harry Connick Jr and Andrea Lam, When the War is Over, with Rachel Griffiths, the Portrait Artist Of The Year competition, and more. ABC will again play host to some of the year's biggest events including Australian of the Year, Australia Day Live Concert, ANZAC Day, New Year’s Eve, Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, NAIDOC and the Classic 100 Concert.

Then, in children and family, Andy Lee will bring his book series to life in new animated series Do Not Watch This Show, plus there will be new preschool series, Knee High Spies, Bluey’s Big Play, Kangaroo Beach, Gardening Australia Junior and more.

ABC News will offer increased offerings across all platforms in 2025, with Media Watch set to return with a new look and new host, Linton Besser, s Paul Barry ends his 10-year run on the program.

Returning flagship TV news programs in 2025 include ABC News Breakfast, Insiders, 7.30, Australian Story – next year with six more episodes, Four Corners, Q+A, Foreign Correspondent – in a new timeslot of 8.00pm Tuesday, Planet America, BTN and Afternoon Briefing with new host Patricia Karvelas. Also returning are audio flagships AM, PM, Radio National Breakfast with new host Sally Sara and The World Today with new host Andy Park. Meanwhile, Fran Kelly will be presenting new program The Radio National Hour.

ABC Director of News, Justin Stevens, said: "The role of ABC NEWS in delivering news and information people know they can trust is becoming increasingly important and will be vital in a federal election year. This year we saw huge audiences for our award-winning journalism and in 2025 we’ll offer even more to all Australians across all platforms, from returning flagship brands to fresh content initiatives, news breaking investigations and essential emergency broadcasting when people need us most."

In the audio space, ABC's podcast slate will continue to provide distinctive, high-quality audio content, while the ABC listen platform evolves to become more personalised.

ABC Director of Audio, Ben Latimer, said: "In 2025 ABC Local Radio stations will remain the true pulse of the cities they serve. With a mix of new hosts and returning favourites, our Local Network will continue to connect deeply with the unique character and personality of each city, reflecting what matters most to their communities. ABC Radio National is reaffirming its role as Australia’s premier audio gateway, offering audiences a window into the rich tapestry of intellectual and creative life in this country. Next year, triple j will celebrate an extraordinary milestone — 50 years as Australia’s most influential and impactful music network. In the on-demand space, our market-leading podcast slate will continue to provide distinctive, high-quality audio content, while our ABC listen platform evolves to become more personalised — delivering the content our audiences want, whenever and wherever they want it."

In 2025 triple j will celebrate 50 years, with Like A Version set to head across international waters for a special run of performances overseas and One Night Stand to takeover another regional town for a night of live music.

As well as returning programs, Marc Fennell will bring a new historical program complimented by a new umbrella feed for history content and media journalist Tim Burrowes will host a new program called MediaLand.

In local programing, Chris Bath will takeover ABC Radio Sydney Drive, with Brigitte Duclos to join the Melbourne lineup in the afternoon slot, alongside new Melbourne Breakfast hosts Bob Murphy and Sharnelle Vella. Ellen Fanning will host Drive in Brisbane, and Gary Adshead will head Drive in Perth. In Adelaide the Spence Denny will return to host Evenings with Rory McLaren the new host of Mornings
