CommBank bolsters app security to thwart scammers

CommBank has introduced three new security features to its app in a bid to combat scams and minimise customer losses. The first feature, a first for a major Australian bank, allows customers to view all digital wallets their payment details are linked to and remove any they don't recognise.

The second feature offers interactive and intelligent warnings for first-time payments, providing enhanced protection for customers who may be on the verge of paying a scammer. The third feature, QR Cardless functionality, verifies everyone who makes deposits to or withdrawals from CommBank accounts using the app, instead of a card. This feature is aimed at better protecting the community from financial crime and allowing for higher deposit limits for those who prefer not to carry cards.

James Roberts, CommBank's Head of Group Fraud, stated, "We're committed to doing what we can to tackle the ever-changing scams and fraud environment. These extra security measures are designed to help disrupt scams and fraud, and ultimately make Australia less attractive to scammers."

Roberts also noted that customer scam losses have halved over the last financial year, indicating a positive impact from their efforts, but acknowledged that there is more work to be done. He said, "Having recently seen our customer scam losses halve over the last financial year we know what we are doing is having a positive impact, but there is more to be done."

More than 7 million Australians have added CommBank payment details to their digital wallets on mobile phones and tablets. These new security measures aim to provide these customers with an extra layer of protection against scams and fraud.
