Opposition leader Dutton credits Wippa's campaign for PM's social media legislation

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has appeared on Nova 96.9's Fitzy & Wippa with Kate Ritchie, crediting Wippa's '36 Months' campaign for inspiring the Prime Minister's new social media legislation promising age restrictions.

This week, Anthony Albanese has announced the Federal Government will introduce new legislation to impose age restrictions on social media access. The national crackdown takes inspiration from South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas' push to ban kids under 14 from setting up social media accounts, though it's not yet clear what ages would be captured under the federal legislation. It follows the publication over the weekend a 276-page report by former High Court chief justice Robert French outlined a legislative vehicle to enact such a ban and enforce social media companies to establish parental consent before allowing teenagers aged 14 and 15 to use their platforms.

Discussing the landmark reforms on the Today Show program on Tuesday morning, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese made clear that the Government plans to work with states and territories to establish a national system, "because we know this is a national issue".

"Make sure you keep talking to the PM," Dutton advised on this morning's Nova radio program, highlighting the importance of continuous dialogue in influencing policy changes. He expressed his belief social media is one of the biggest issues faced by the current generation of leadership.

"Without 36 Months, I don't think the momentum would have been there for the PM to act," Dutton stated, acknowledging the impact of the campaign on the government's decision. The '36 Months' campaign has been instrumental in bringing the issue of social media use among children to the forefront of political discussions.

Dutton also revealed his party's stance on the age limit for social media use. "'If the government goes ahead at 14, then we will change that if we're elected at the next election'" he declared, indicating a potential increase in the age limit to 16 if his party is elected in the next election.

Fitzy & Wippa with Kate Ritchie airs from 6am to 9am on Nova 96.9 in Sydney and nationally on the Nova Network from 5am.
