Wise and Budgy Smuggler team up on togs to tackle hidden fees for Aussie millennials abroad

International payments app Wise has joined forces with swimwear brand Budgy Smuggler to tackle the common travel faux pas of hidden fees.

This issue is particularly prevalent among Australian millennials, with 69% admitting to committing travel faux pas, including attempting to pay with a card in cash-only locations.

To help Aussies avoid these hidden fees when spending overseas, Wise and Budgy Smuggler have created limited edition swimwear with a Wise-card-sized pocket. The Wise x Budgy Smuggler swimwear will be available for purchase from July 10.

The range also comes as new research commissioned by Wise from YouGov revealed 90% of Aussie millennials have travelled internationally, with 62% doing so in the past three years. However, their overseas adventures are not without hiccups. A significant 77% of Aussie millennials who have travelled abroad have been annoyed by other Australians overseas.

The research found 77% of Aussie millennials believe Europeans could learn from Australians, particularly in mastering humour (33%) and making coffee (29%). Conversely, Australians could learn from Europeans how to be more cultured (41%) and how to drink responsibly (40%).

The research also highlighted 18% of Aussie millennials who have travelled abroad may have upset locals by getting the tipping etiquette wrong, while 22% have been left stumped by trying to use a card in a cash-only place.

A staggering 80% of Aussie millennials use their bank-issued cards overseas, resulting in hidden fees from inflated exchange rates and transaction fees when spending outside Australia.

Wise, a global technology company that allows people and businesses to hold 40 currencies, move money between countries, and spend money abroad, was co-founded by Kristo Käärmann and Taavet Hinrikus.

Influencer Liam Moore commented on the partnership, "Aussies love a Euro Summer - but while they’re on their European adventures, hoards of millennials often fall victim to travel faux pas, from asking someone where the dunny is, or trying to guess someone’s accent," he said.

"Without a doubt, the most underrated faux pas is paying for your entire European summer with your Aussie bank card and getting stung each step of the way with sneaky fees. Something I’ve definitely done before. Luckily, our favourite Aussie cozzies come with a perfect Wise-card-sized pocket, so we can all avoid getting ripped off - whether you’re swimming in Sicily or sunbaking in Santorini."

Wise launched in 2011 under its original name TransferWise. Listed on the London Stock Exchange under the ticker, WISE, the company supported around 12.8 million people and businesses in fiscal year 2024, processing approximately £118.5 billion in cross-border transactions, and saving customers over £1.8 billion.
