A cup of coffee,
From Rwanda to Sydney,
Costs more than we see.
Sydney's Lumapixel and St Remio brew up a stir at Cannes with 'the real cost of coffee'
Sydney-based creative production agency, Lumapixel, has reached the finals in the Best Documentary Short category at the Cannes World Film Festival's 'Remembering the Future' awards. The accolade was for its brand documentary, 'The real cost of coffee', created in collaboration with client, St Remio.
The Cannes World Film Festival, now in its third year, promotes emerging talent and focuses on cause-driven, environmental, humanitarian, and social justice issues. 'The real cost of coffee' explores the unsustainable model of current coffee production and the challenges coffee farmers face, including financial inequality, inadequate agronomic training, and climate change. The documentary aims to shift the conversation from commodity to community in relation to coffee, one of the world's most popular drinks.
"The whole ethos of St Remio is to challenge the way consumers view coffee and highlight the real issues facing coffee farmers," said Julia Tink, Director of St Remio. She believes that each coffee roaster has a social and moral responsibility to coffee farmers to ensure that the coffee we enjoy every day isn't at the expense of these communities.
The documentary is currently entering the international film festival circuit. Lumapixel has previously worked on sustainability projects in Africa and this documentary was their second trip to Rwanda with the St Remio brand.
"It has been an absolute privilege to bring this story to life and support St Remio in their mission to change how we think about our coffee from the end of the supply chain with our favourite beans or barista to the beginning, to look at who grows this crop for us and what do they need to survive and thrive across successive generations," says Gary Freitas, Managing Director of Lumapixel.
Lumapixel is a creative production agency based in Sydney, working with brands, marketing and advertising agencies, TV commercial clients, event organisers, CMOs and digital marketers globally. St Remio is a coffee brand that focuses on celebrating the people behind coffee production and is committed to sourcing sustainable coffee and supporting coffee growing communities.
