Snap Partner Summit 2024: Upgraded AR glasses tech, new AI app features, streamlined AR Lens Studio
Snap Inc. has hosted its 6th annual Partner Summit, bringing together Snapchatters, creators, developers, partners, and advertisers for a showcase of the tech company's latest product announcements.
Major announcements including the introduction of the fifth generation of Spectacles, the standalone AR glasses powered by the new Snap OS, as well as updates to Lens Studio, new AI features on the Snapchat app, and new self serve tools in Snap Star Collab Studio.
The latest Spectacles are designed with a dual system-on-a-chip architecture, featuring two Snapdragon processors from Qualcomm. Snap OS leverages proprietary technology, including Liquid Crystal on Silicon (LCoS) micro-projectors and waveguides, and is navigated with hand and voice commands.
Snap is also partnering with OpenAI to provide access to powerful multimodal large language models for building Lenses, with the newly rebuilt Lens Studio 5.0 allowing developers to quickly push their projects to Spectacles.
The Snapchat platform, with more than 850 million users, is also in for a major update, with a simplified version of the app currently being tested with a select group of Snapchatters around the world.
Meanwhile, a series of new AI features was introduced, including a new AI lens that allows users to see elderly versions of themselves; new AI that can apply captions and lenses to Memories; and Advanced Snapping features that use My AI to problem solve - interpreting complex parking signs, translating menus and identifying unique plants.
Snap also will introduce a number of upgrades to its AR Platform, with Lens Studio having been rebuilt from the ground up for AR developers and teams to build more robust, advanced AR experiences. The number of creators posting publicly has more than tripled over the past year.
AR creation has been streamlined by the new Easy Lens tool, which makes it possible to build Lenses in a matter of minutes via a large language model chat interface that connects with Lens Studio components, and builds Lenses in front of your eyes. Other GenA features in Lens Studio will include Animation Blending, Body Morph, and Icon Generation. In the near future, Snap will make it possible to generate animations through text descriptions and introduce support Video for 3D Gaussian Splats.
A new Profile Design allows Snapchatters aged 16 and older to easily toggle between their personal and public accounts. There are also a suite of new features to help creators make content and build community, and a Snap Star Collab Studio update will accelerate creator and brand partnerships by providing self-serve tools for creators to share their engagement and demographic data to potential advertisers.
