Badminton, eclectic grandpa clothing and jellyfish-inspired design top Pinterest Predicts consumer trends for 2024

Pinterest, the visual discovery social media platform, has unveiled its annual trends report, 'Pinterest Predicts', offering early insights into consumer trends for 2024.

The report is based on search data from its global user base, which exceeds 480 million. The social media platform claims its 'Pinterest Predicts' report has consistently demonstrated an 80% success rate over the past four years, according to Pinterest's global search data analysis from July 2018 to June 2023. The report amalgamates Pinterest's first-party signals, predictive performance data, and predictive models.

Key trends predicted for 2024 include 'Eclectic Grandpa', a trend that sees Gen Z and Boomers embracing grandpacore, retro streetwear, chic cardigans and customised clothing. 'Making a racket' is recognition that badminton is making a comeback, with searches on everything from outfits to wear and aesthetic to trash talk all on the cards in the next year.

'Be Jelly' is another trend on the Pinterest list, and reflects a growing popularity of content covering home decor, couture and beauty ideas inspired by the jellyfish.

'Rest stops', meanwhile, is the trend seeing Gen Z and Millennials increasingly retreating to laidback locales, solo travel and hotel staycations that offer the opposite of a jam-packed itinerary.

Stacy Malone, VP of Global Business Marketing at Pinterest, highlighted the unique value proposition of the platform's trend predictions.

"That latest viral hit might be fun to watch but they're problematic for brands and marketers to fully leverage because they are unpredictable and short lived. While on other platforms trends come and go rapidly, Pinterest Predicts trends last longer than anywhere else on the internet, offering marketers the ultimate cheat sheet to shape their marketing campaigns in 2024," she said.
