Aussies fear app failures could 'ruin' Christmas: Cisco AppDynamics survey

The festive season is a time of joy and celebration, but for many Australians, it's also a time of heightened reliance on digital applications. A recent survey by Cisco AppDynamics reveals 39% of Australians fear that application failures could 'ruin' their Christmas or holiday festivities in 2023.

The Holiday Applications Pulse Survey, which interviewed 1000 Australians, delved into the nation's intended use of apps and their concerns about technology during the Christmas period. The results highlight a significant dependency on digital applications, with 52% of respondents stating that apps are critical to ensuring an enjoyable holiday period.

Cisco AppDynamics said the survey results underscore the increasing reliance on digital applications during the holiday season, with 47% of respondents intending to use apps more this year than last.

The survey also revealed the types of apps Australians are most likely to use during the holiday season. Nearly three quarters (74%) of respondents will turn to entertainment applications, while 65% expect to rely on apps for last-minute gift shopping or gathering ingredients and recipes for cooking. The same percentage anticipate using online financial services to make unexpected payments or transfers.

When asked about the most critical apps for a smooth Christmas and holiday period, respondents classified entertainment, banking, communication, and shopping apps as the most important. However, these apps also appear to be a source of anxiety, with 62% of consumers stating that banking app failures are their top concern, followed by messaging (51%) and shopping (37%) apps.

In addition, 45% of respondents believe music and streaming apps are the most critical for avoiding frustrations during the festivities. Yet, the survey also found Australians are not forgiving when it comes to app failures: 44% of those interviewed said they wouldn't forgive an application that lets them down during this period, and 20% stated they would delete the app for good if they encountered serious issues.
