Radio industry wants TV broadcasters' prominence rule over streamers

Commercial Radio & Audio (CRA), the peak industry body representing commercial radio broadcasters in Australia, has expressed optimism over the recent introduction of the Communications Legislation Amendment (Prominence and Anti-siphoning) Bill 2023, which ensures local TV broadcasters have their apps placed prominantly on smart TV home screens.

CRA is hopeful that similar provisions will soon be introduced to ensure the prominence of radio, facilitating free, easy, and universal access to Australian radio in cars and on smart speakers.

CRA CEO Ford Ennals emphasised the importance of such a regime, stating: 'It is critical for both the sustainability of the radio industry and community safety that all Australians can easily access a local radio station; for example, during emergencies such as bushfires, storms, or even traffic incidents.'

The Australian radio industry, which includes commercial radio broadcasters, the ABC, SBS and CBAA, is collectively calling for a joint regulatory solution from the Government. This united front highlights the industry's shared interest in ensuring the continued relevance and accessibility of radio in an increasingly digital media landscape.

CRA's advocacy for radio prominence is part of its broader mandate to manage various aspects of the industry.
