Generations divided over the inclusion of new sports in Paris Olympics, finds YouGov

The inclusion of new sports like breakdancing, skateboarding, surfing and climbing might just be turning Baby Boomers away from the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympic Games, according to new research from YouGov.

The study revealed that the inclusion of 'Breaking' (breakdancing) in the Olympic lineup has reportedly increased interest among younger viewers, but has had the opposite affect with older generations. 30% of Gen Z and 32% of Millennials stated that this addition makes them more likely to watch the games. However, only 7% of Baby Boomers shared this sentiment, with 45% saying they are less likely to watch the Olympics following the inclusion of this new sport.

Similar sentiments were seen with the inclusion of Skateboarding, which has made 36% of Baby Boomers less likely to watch the Olympics, as well as Sport Climbing (31% less likely) and Surfing (29% less likely).

Meanwhile, Gen X are likely to dominate viewership for The 2024 Paris Olympics is likely to see a significant viewership from Gen X, with 65% planning to watch the event, according to a recent study by YouGov.

Gen Z and Millennials follow closely, each with 62% expressing their viewing intention. Baby Boomers, however, are the least likely to tune in, with only 56% indicating they would watch the Olympics.

As for the viewing platforms, the majority of Australians (80%) who are likely to tune into the Olympics intend to watch the events on live television. Live streaming platforms and catch-up TV both account for 34% of the intended viewership, while a small 4% plan to watch the games live, in-person, in Paris.

The YouGov study was conducted online between 19th and 21st February 2024, with a nationally representative sample of 1,033 Australians aged 18 years and older.
