Billboards cry out loud,
'Greenwashing' fuels the deceit,
Truth must be allowed.
Comms Declare and Alchemy One launch billboard campaign against fossil fuel advertising
Alchemy One ND Comms Declare have launched a billboard campaign across Australian capital cities, advocating for a ban on fossil fuel advertising. The billboards carry a sarcastic message, 'Everything is fine (according to big coal and gas)', highlighting the perceived hypocrisy of fossil fuel companies' advertising messages. The campaign links the burning of fossil fuels to Australia's severe bushfires, heatwaves, and the record-breaking heat of 2023.
The billboards were designed by Comms Declare Creative Director, Matt Bray, and form part of a broader digital campaign. The latest billboard has been erected in the inner-west electorate of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, an area particularly vulnerable to extreme heat.
Comms Declare Founder, Belinda Noble, has called on the public to write to the Federal Government or their local council to eliminate fossil fuel 'greenwashing' and misinformation from advertising, sponsorships, and PR. "We can’t reach our climate goals while allowing big coal and gas companies to use advertising, sponsorships and PR to undermine the urgently needed transition to clean energy. We’re asking people to write to the Federal Government or their local council to rid our streets, sports, schools and arts of fossil fuel greenwashing and misinformation," Noble said.
Fossil Ad Ban, a project of Comms Declare, was launched in mid-2022 and advocates for restrictions on fossil fuel advertising and sponsorships in Australia. Sixteen councils, including the City of Sydney, have already voted to restrict fossil fuel ads on council property or events. Fossil Ad Ban's mission also includes mandating greenhouse pollution labels on carbon-intensive products and services.
