Dating app users more likely to value physical appearance than non-users: YouGov

YouGov has published new insights into the dating app habits of Australians, revealing that nearly one in three Australians have used a dating app at some point. According to the research, dating app users (84%) were far more likely than non-users (69%) to value physical appearance in their partner.

Men (35%) were more likely to use these platforms compared to women (27%), while Millennials (53%) were the most likely age group to use dating apps, followed by Gen Z (36%), Gen X (25%), and Baby Boomers (10%).

The most popular dating app among Australians is Tinder, used by 64% of app users. Following Tinder, Bumble (33%), Hinge (21%), and eHarmony (20%) were the next most popular choices.

Hinge has the largest proportion of users looking for an exclusive relationship (71%) or a spouse/life partner (53%) among the top four apps. In contrast, Tinder has the smallest proportion of users looking for an exclusive relationship (47%) or a spouse/life partner (36%).

Casual daters, those looking for a hookup, make up the largest category of Tinder (56%) and Grindr (78%) users. More than half of Coffee Meets Bagel (66%) and OkCupid (53%) users are also looking for a casual fling.

Despite the popularity of these platforms, 70% of Australians say they’ve never used a dating app before. Of these non-users, 63% cited being in a relationship or not currently looking for a connection as the reason for not using an app. Other reasons included preferring to meet and get to know people in person (24%), and concerns about fake or misleading profiles (19%).

Looking to the future, 15% of non-users said they would be open to using an app, while 52% said they’d be unlikely to.

The study was conducted online between 15 and 17 April 2024, with a national sample of 1,046 Australians.
