Greenpeace's latest campaign tackles deforestation with animation

Greenpeace has unveiled a new campaign to raise awareness of the impacts of Australia's deforestation crisis on native animals, particularly Koalas.

'Fight For Our Forests' was led by Photoplay director Dropbear, using multiple animation techniques including 3D printed, hand-crafted, stop-motion animation techniques.

The campaign conveys the scale of the destruction created by deforestation, with an MCG-sized area of forest and bushland bulldozed in Australia every two minutes, killing millions of native animals and harming the land. The creative centres on a koala and its joey, illustrating the direct impact of land clearing to their home.

"For a craft director, this project ticked many boxes and I’m very proud of the visuals that were created in such a short amount of time. The production values of this film are extremely high and I’m so thankful for all the crafts people and artists who contributed to the production to make my vision a reality," said Dropbear.

Dropbear collaborated with 3D animator Duncan McDonald to create the animal characters using CGI. A total of 77 individual 3D printed models were used in the production, each representing a frame of animation. The sets were hand-crafted and brought to life using different lighting states and special effects.

Cinematographer Ceaser Salmeron shot the spot with a probe lens to lend a sense of real-world scale to the models and sets. The decision to use miniatures was made to evoke nostalgia and foster a deeper emotional connection with audiences.

"I’m also very grateful to the team at Greenpeace for trusting me with their campaign and giving me the creative freedom to make something that I hope motivates and engages audiences to take action to protect our natural heritage," said Dropbear.
