Acast fuels podcast boom down under: $31m payout to creators

Acast, the independent podcast company, has reportedly paid out $31 million to podcast creators in Australia and New Zealand since its local launch in 2017.

The company, which claims to empower podcasters to monetise their shows to their full potential, has seen a significant increase in local listenership, with over 31 million monthly listens in the region.

This growth has been boosted by local podcast signings in 2023, including Mark Bouris’ The Mentor and Straight Talk podcasts, and a collaboration with Casefile Presents to launch The Bakersfield Three podcast series. The latter has garnered an impressive 700,000 listens across Australia and New Zealand and over 4 million globally within the first four weeks of launching.

Acast's commitment to fostering the podcasting community also saw eight new podcasts added to its Creator Network in 2023. These additions have contributed over 2.35 million monthly listens locally and over three million global monthly listens.

"As a home for independent podcasters, it's great to add such a broad range of talented voices to the Acast Creator Network," Guy Scott-Wilson, Content Director of Acast AU/NZ, stated. "Acast is committed to empowering creators like these to continue to grow and achieve their ambitions while retaining full creative and commercial control. These revenue numbers reflect how Acast continues to supercharge the audio creator economy in this part of the world."

Henrik Isaksson, Managing Director of Acast AU/NZ, echoed this sentiment, saying it's only on the beginning steps of its objective.

"Only a few years ago we set out on a mission to create the most valuable marketplace for podcasters, no matter their size," he said. "To see that Acast has delivered $31 million dollars to creators, since launching in Australia and New Zealand, is a testament to the strong relationships and services we offer."

Founded in 2014, Acast operates a marketplace spanning more than 100,000 podcasts, 2,300 advertisers and 400 million monthly listens globally. The company recently added Alpha Blokes, Basically Besties, Girls That Invest, Hello Sport, Only Wrong Answers, To Be Frank with Constance Hall, We Got the Chocolates and We Mean Well to its Creator Network.
