Google crowns Braintrack 'best app for good' in fight against dementia
Google has bestowed the title of 'Best App for Good 2023' upon BrainTrack, a free application developed by Dementia Australia and Deakin University's Applied Artificial Intelligence Institute.
The app, which helps users monitor and understand changes in cognition over time, has been downloaded more than 60,000 times since its launch in October 2022.
BrainTrack's unique approach to cognitive health, featuring travel-themed games adapted from validated cognitive testing, has been lauded by Google. The tech giant praised the app for its innovative focus on declining cognitive abilities and its clever combination of travel and learning. The app also allows users to share their results with their GP, facilitating early identification of cognitive changes.
Dementia Australia CEO Maree McCabe AM emphasised the critical role of early diagnosis in managing dementia. She noted over 400,000 Australians are currently living with the condition, a number projected to double by 2058.
"With more than 400,000 Australians living with dementia - which is projected to increase to more than 800,000 by 2058 - improving early diagnosis must be a priority," McCabe said.
McCabe also expressed her admiration for the team behind BrainTrack. "I congratulate the incredible team behind this groundbreaking tool that is increasing the understanding of dementia and raising awareness about the importance of monitoring and talking about brain health," she said.
The development of BrainTrack was funded by the Australian Government, highlighting the nation's commitment to combating the growing issue of dementia.
