Google Search gets a gen AI upgrade

Google has integrated a new Gemini model into Google Search, unveiling a series of new generative AI-enabled advanced features that will first be rolled out to Search Labs users.

The AI Overviews feature, which provides quick answers to user queries, has already been utilised billions of times through Google's experiment in Search Labs. The feature is set to roll out to everyone in the U.S., with more countries expected to follow suit soon. Google anticipates that this feature will reach over a billion people by the end of the year.

AI Overviews gives users access to a greater diversity of websites for help with more complex questions. Links included in AI Overviews are receiving more clicks than if the page had appeared as a traditional web listing for that query. In the near future, users will be able to adjust their AI Overview with options to simplify the language or break it down in more detail.

The custom Gemini model’s multi-step reasoning capabilities will assist with increasingly complex questions. Search will also be able to plan with users, starting with meals and vacations. Meal and trip planning are now available in Search Labs in English in the U.S.

Google plans to soon introduce an AI-organised results page for users looking for fresh ideas. Advancements in video understanding will allow users to ask questions with video. Searching with video will be available soon for Search Labs users in English in the U.S.
