New role for Maguire,
In the world of publishing,
Nine's future looks bright.
Nine confirms Tory Maguire as managing director of publishing
Nine has confirmed the appointment of Tory Maguire as its new Managing Director - Publishing a month after it was revealed James Chessell would be stepping down from the position but remaining working for the media giant.
Maguire will oversee Nine's publishing assets, including metro mastheads and The Australian Financial Review. Currently serving as the Executive Editor for The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, Brisbane Times, and WA Today, Nine said Maguire has been instrumental in transforming newsrooms and driving significant growth in all areas of her remit since taking on the role in July 2021.
A process is currently underway to appoint a new Executive Editor. Chessell will continue to work with Nine in a new capacity, leading engagement with Government and its digital platform partners.
Maguire's leadership has seen a growth in public interest journalism at the mastheads, working closely with colleagues in Nine's broadcast television division. Prior to her current role, Maguire held senior editorial roles at News Corp and The Huffington Post, and served as National Editor at Nine's metro mastheads.
"Tory is a great executive, who has overseen renewal in our metro mastheads and has made some tough and brave calls about public interest journalism. We welcome her to this role and look forward to her contribution to the success of our business," said Mike Sneesby, CEO of Nine.
"The past two years running the metro mastheads has been the absolute highlight of my career and given me a close up view of the extraordinary work that goes into producing Australia's best journalism. The opportunity to throw myself into growing the business behind that journalism is thrilling. Our mastheads are a vital player in Australian society as well as a thriving commercial operation and I am very optimistic about their future," Maguire said.
Chessell's new role will focus on ensuring the right regulatory settings are in place to support the future of local media and developing strong commercial partnerships with global digital platforms.
"These areas are a high priority for our business - ensuring we have the right regulatory settings in place to support the future of local media and developing strong commercial partnerships with the global digital platforms. James' experience and extensive knowledge of the media landscape will be invaluable as we navigate the developing regulatory and commercial environments," Sneesby said in an email message.
"I want to wish Tory all the best as we transition the MD of Publishing role early next year. She has done more than most to transform the way we operate with a focus on quality and digital excellence and I can't wait to see her do it on a bigger scale," Chessell added.
