Trump fronts The Australian's 60th anniversary edition

The Australian, a leading national news brand, is celebrating its 60th anniversary today, with the attempted assignation of former US President Donald Trump making the front cover story.

The first issue of The Australian was published by Rupert Murdoch on July 15, 1964, marking it as the first truly national daily newspaper. Today, The Australian claims to be the most read national newspaper in the country, with 4.091 million Australians consuming its content every month across print and digital platforms.

The 60th anniversary edition is printed on special high-quality newsprint to enhance its value as a collector's item. The anniversary edition features a story about twins Kate and Rob Emms, who were born on the day The Australian was launched. The issue also includes a feature on how The Australian began and a message to readers from Editor-In-Chief, Michelle Gunn.

A digital printed edition of the very first newspaper from July 15, 1964, will also be published online. The Australian has created a special hub on its app and website to showcase all of the videos, images, cartoons and stories published for the 60th anniversary.

Sky News will premiere a one-hour documentary titled 'The Australian: 60 Years of News' tonight at 8pm AEST, hosted by Sky News Host and Associate Editor of The Australian, Chris Kenny. The documentary will feature historic newsroom footage and interviews with prominent figures who have contributed to the masthead’s national affairs coverage for six decades, including The Australian’s founder Rupert Murdoch.

Editor-In-Chief of The Australian, Michelle Gunn, said: “Today we mark six decades of reporting, interpreting and commenting on the news, bringing the very best journalism to our subscribers. Every day we take part in the contest of ideas that helps to shape our nation. As we celebrate our 60th birthday today our purpose remains the same as when we began, to reflect a nation to itself. Welcome to 60 years of The Australian. Here’s to the next 60 years.”

The Australian's 60th anniversary is a significant milestone in the history of Australian journalism, marking six decades of shaping national discourse and reflecting the nation to itself.
