Alone Australia becomes standout TV hit of 2024 with 3m viewers

The second season of 'Alone Australia' has captivated over 3 million Australians, marking it as one of the standout TV hits of 2024 for SBS.

The series, which has particularly resonated with the key demographic of 25-54 year-olds, has outperformed rival franchises on other TV networks over a 28-day period. SBS said the first two episodes of the series have each surpassed a total TV reach of 1 million. The show has also significantly boosted digital BVOD viewing for SBS, both for 'Alone Australia' and more broadly, increasing active watchers on SBS On Demand.

'Alone Australia' ranks highly on the OzTAM VPM rankings for both 7-day and 28-day charts. The recently aired Episode 6 drew a Total TV National Average Audience of 264,000 and a BVOD National Average Audience of 39,000. These audience numbers are expected to grow as more Australians tune into the program on SBS On Demand over the coming weeks.

In 2023, each episode of 'Alone Australia' drew more than 1 million viewers, with almost half of that audience coming from digital. The show is SBS's most successful commissioned series of the year.

Kathryn Fink, SBS Director of Television, commented on the show's success, "The conditions might be getting colder and harsher on New Zealand’s South Island as the second season of Alone Australia enters its final weeks, but Australians are continuing to warm to the raw and inspiring stories of the brave survivalists who remain. Following the enormous success of the launch of Alone Australia last year, the second series is also drawing significant audiences on TV and on SBS On Demand, and we’re delighted the show has once again positioned itself as a standout hit of the year. It’s also proving the power of word-of-mouth, as we see audiences for each episode continuing to lift, week after week – as well as new audiences coming to Alone for the first time - driven by BVOD viewing."

Adam Sadler, SBS Director of Media Sales, also praised the show's performance, "As said all year, Alone Australia is a proven performer that has delivered massively for SBS both on broadcast and digital viewing. Season 2 is again leading the way in digital TV viewing and for us commercially it is importantly resonating strongly in the key 25-54 demographic. The show is a demonstration of the true power of television as a medium when broadcast and digital are combined, and how when it comes to reach and audience, there is no more powerful medium. People are coming in for Alone Australia and are also sampling some of the other amazing content on offer on the SBS On Demand platform. With a number of weeks to go we can’t wait to see the numbers and audiences built as Australia tunes in to see who will survive the longest."
